Aparachutemind is in full swing again!.

Dear readers,

After a period of more than a year without posts in my blog, I am back. The reason for my absence was the birth of my beautiful daughter Andrea almost a year ago. After her birth, I took a break form all blogging activity to concentrate on Andrea, now the centre of our little universe. I re-start the blog with a post I had written a year ago about the comparison between the IMF’s strategies in former Yugoslavia and in Spain, and their disastrous consequences. The reason that has speeded up my urge to write more is the news I have heard from serious riots in Bosnia, a poverty-stricken nation with mass unemployment and poverty. Immediately, the comparison with Spain struck me as our country is also suffering brutal austerity policies imposed by the IMF, like Bosnia as part of former Yugoslavia in the 80’s. You’ll know more when you read the post.

  My name is Antonio Cuadrado-Fernandez, I am a Norwich-based literary critic, language tutor, ecopoetry instructor, researcher in contemporary socio-political and geopolitical issues at the International Observatory on Stability and Conflict (OISC) and at the International Network for Alternative Academia, and translator. I hold a PhD. in Literature by the School of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia and a Master’s degree in Commonwealth literature and Culture by the University of Barcelona. My scholarly interests range from ecopoetics and ecocriticism, geopolitics, cognitive poetics and linguistics, neurophenomenology, evolutionary biology, human geography and philosophy. This blog reflects thus all that I am passionate about as a human being: intercultural relations, ethics and empathy, immigration, the effects of global capitalism on the environment and on Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, politics, and geopolitics, sometimes through criticism, sometimes through the lenses of art and creativity. I myself was born and raised on the fringe of two cultures, Catalan and Spanish; I have thus experienced first hand the joys and oddities of (un)belonging in Catalan bilingual society, as well as the consequences of cultural and emotional disarray in my parents, which prompted me to further explore it in what would become later an inextricable part of my professional and academic career. We live in turbulent times, amidst the most important ecological crisis of our time, and amidst one of the worst economic crisis/fraud in years threatening to radically reshape the moral and ethical foundations of the world as we have known it for years. This blog aims to become a space of reflection, critical analysis and debate on contemporary issues from my own Catalan, Spanish and English trilingual perspective. Be very welcome, Antonio PD: the title of my blog, a parachute mind, is inspired in a quote that is seemingly attributed to Albert Einstein and Frank Zappa, but it doesn’t matter to me, I admire them both, the quote is fantastic and summarises perfectly well what this blog is about: “A mind is like a parachute.
